Isolate vs Full Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum CBD

Seeing as you are here, we guess you know what CBD is. For those that don’t have a clue, do not worry as this guide will help you understand the differences between the three main types of CBD available to date; Isolate, Broad Spectrum and Full Spectrum.

As mentioned in one of our previous blogs, “Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main compounds in the cannabis plant. It is the second most studied component after the very famous psychoactive THC. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is completely non-psychoactive and 100% legal. CBD natural concentration in the hemp plant is usually around 1 to 3%.”

    What is Isolate CBD?

CBD isolate is exactly how it sounds! The extraction method is done by eliminating all other cannabinoids from the plant except the CBD. This is great for those that are sensitive to the other compounds such as THC, terpenes, flavonoids and more. Isolate is classed as the purest version of CBD as most are 99.9% pure CBD with no traces of THC.

    What is Full Spectrum CBD?

Full Spectrum CBD (whole plant extract), is the type of CBD that contains everything the plant contains. This means that the CBD will contain all other cannabinoids such as CBG (Cannabigerol), CBN (Cannabinol), Terpenes and traces of THC (below 0.2%). Full Spectrum creates the “entourage effect”, this is where all the cannabinoids work together in synergy within the body and surpass isolated compounds.

    What is Broad Spectrum CBD?

This is a mix of both Full Spectrum and Isolate. Imagine consuming all the beneficial cannabinoids from Full Spectrum CBD but without worrying about THC content, with Broad Spectrum you won’t need to. That’s right, Broad Spectrum contains all the cannabinoids that Full Spectrum CBD contain but the THC content is removed, leaving you with the “entourage effect” but with 0% THC.

    Glossary:

Entourage Effect – Occurs when many natural compounds work together within the human body to produce stronger and more effective results, surpassing any single isolated products. Isolated compounds may share the same beneficial uses; however, the entourage effect multiplies the results.

Flavonoids - Responsible for the colours on the hemp plant, its what makes our fruit shiny (red apples). Known to have antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Terpenes – Compounds that carry the smell and flavour (aroma), whether it be limonene (found in citrus fruits) or linalool (found in lavender), terpenes may have some therapeutic effects on the human body, known as aromatherapy.
